GRDA, GPHA partner to ease congestion at Tema Port

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), in partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), has initiated measures to ease congestion at the Tema Port and improve the movement of containers.

The initiative follows concerns raised by the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) and freight forwarders about congestion at the port and its impact on cargo clearance and trade activities.

Speaking after the signing of an off-taker agreement with Integrated Services Solution for container haulage, GRDA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Frederick Appoh, said the authority had the capacity to transport about 220 containers daily from the ports.

He said the authority intended to scale up its operations to support efforts to decongest the Tema Port, improve container movement and make cargo transportation more efficient.

The partnership is expected to expand the use of rail transport for moving containers from the port, potentially reducing pressure on the road network and improving efficiency across Ghana’s freight and logistics sector.

The initiative comes amid calls from traders and freight forwarders for measures to address port congestion, which can delay cargo clearance and increase costs for businesses.

By increasing the movement of containers by rail, the authorities aim to strengthen freight operations and support smoother trade activities through the Tema Port.
