Grace Nortey to Be Laid to Rest on October 31 as Ghana Bids Farewell to Screen Legend

Ghana’s entertainment industry is preparing to bid a final farewell to veteran actress Grace Naa Kwarley Nortey, who will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra.

The funeral service is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by a private interment. A thanksgiving service will be held on November 1 at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Osu.

Grace Nortey passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 89, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades.

Affectionately remembered as “Maame Gyata,” Nortey was one of the familiar faces of Ghanaian theatre, television and film during the golden era of local television drama. She featured in popular productions including Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Key Soap Concert Party, Cantata, Taxi Driver and Thursday Theatre.

Her career extended beyond television. She worked in radio and theatre before making a lasting impact on the film industry. Her film credits included Sinking Sands, Ties That Bind and the internationally acclaimed Beasts of No Nation, where she played the Old Witch Woman.

Nortey’s contribution to Ghanaian entertainment earned her recognition through several honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Star International Film Festival.

Her commanding performances and memorable portrayals of strong women made her a beloved figure among generations of Ghanaian viewers.

As colleagues, fans and loved ones prepare to gather for her final farewell, Ghana is once again reminded of the remarkable entertainers who helped shape the country’s creative industry.

Grace Nortey may have taken her final bow, but the characters she brought to life and the legacy she built on Ghanaian screens will continue to live on.
