The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has commenced investigations into an alleged extortion involving a Customs officer at the Kotoka International Airport.
The investigation follows a video circulating on social media in which a traveller alleged that a Customs officer collected GH¢600 from her without issuing a receipt.
The allegation has attracted public attention, prompting the GRA to look into the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
In a press release, the GRA said it had taken note of the allegation and had initiated investigations to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The Authority said it takes allegations of misconduct involving its officers seriously and remains committed to maintaining professionalism, accountability and integrity in the discharge of its duties.
The GRA is expected to establish whether the reported payment was authorised and the circumstances under which the money was allegedly collected.
The Authority has assured the public that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The GRA has also encouraged members of the public who encounter suspected misconduct or extortion involving its officers to report such incidents through the appropriate channels.
The allegation against the Customs officer remains unproven pending the outcome of the investigation.
