The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025. This decision follows a high-level meeting between the Union’s National Executive Committee and the Ministry of Transport.
Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, disclosed the directive during an interview . He explained that the decision aligns with a recent decrease in fuel prices and broader efforts to alleviate the financial burden on Ghanaians.
“After a marathon meeting with the Transport Ministry, we agreed on a 15% reduction in transport fares starting Saturday, May 24. This is our response to the significant drop in fuel prices,” Alhaji Moro stated.
Fuel Price Influence
Alhaji Moro elaborated that the reduction was calculated based on a fuel price decrease of approximately 18%. GPRTU traditionally uses a formula where one-third of the percentage drop in fuel prices is applied to transport fare adjustments. However, the Union chose a 15% reduction as a goodwill gesture.
“We are hopeful that this move will encourage other sectors, such as spare parts dealers, to follow suit and lower their prices,” he noted.
Balancing Costs
Despite the fare reduction, Alhaji Moro highlighted that other operational costs, such as lubricants, permits, and taxes, remain unchanged. “This reduction is our contribution to Ghana’s economic recovery efforts. We prioritized relief for passengers over waiting for all cost components to decrease,” he emphasized.
Compliance and Enforcement
Alhaji Moro issued a stern warning to Union members who might defy the directive, urging passengers to report non-compliant drivers to the nearest police station.
“When fares increase, everyone adjusts. The same principle applies when fares are reduced. Passengers who feel cheated should report offenders—not through violence, but by involving the authorities,” he appealed.
He also revealed plans to address internal issues within the Union, stating, “We will take steps to flush out bad elements among our members to maintain discipline and compliance.”
This fare reduction has been welcomed by many, as it offers financial relief to commuters and reflects the Union’s commitment to supporting national recovery efforts.
