GPL: Clubs and officials pay tribute to slain Kotoko fan Nana Pooley as league resume

The Ghana Premier League returned this weekend with all teams observing a minute’s silence in memory of Nana Pooley, the Asante Kotoko fan who was stabbed to death in a tragic act of hooliganism at the Nsoatre Stadium in early February.

His death led to the temporary suspension of the league, prompting the introduction of new safety measures.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) directed all match venues to hold a moment of silence before kick-off. Asante Kotoko players went further, displaying a banner in tribute to Pooley, who was known for his unwavering support, travelling with the team across the country.

Pooley was laid to rest on Thursday, March 6, 2025. In addition to the minute’s silence, the GFA approved the use of black armbands during this weekend’s matches as a sign of respect.

Division One and Women’s Premier League teams had already honoured Pooley in their respective fixtures.

His tragic passing has intensified discussions on eradicating hooliganism, with enhanced security measures now in place to protect players, officials, and fans.
