The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced that Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2462, which currently allows mining in forest reserves, will be revoked once Parliament reconvenes.
In a media briefing, Mr. Gyamfi reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to fighting illegal mining popularly known as galamsey and protecting Ghana’s natural environment.
He acknowledged that the revocation process has taken longer than expected due to legal deliberations on whether the law should be amended or repealed outright.
However, he assured the public that all the necessary steps for its repeal have already been initiated.
Gyamfi further revealed that the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that a bill to annul the legislation is ready and will be tabled as soon as Parliament returns from recess.
The decision to repeal the law marks a significant policy shift aimed at curbing environmental degradation and reinforcing the government’s renewed clampdown on illegal mining operations across the country.
