Gov’t Must Prioritize Local Universities in Scholarship Allocations – Prof. Dartey-Baah
The Director of Institutional Advancement at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwasi Dartey-Baah, has called on the government to restructure its scholarship policies by prioritizing local universities over foreign institutions.
He emphasized that channeling more financial support into Ghanaian universities would strengthen the country’s educational system, enhance research capabilities, and retain top talents within the nation.
Speaking at an academic forum, Prof. Dartey-Baah highlighted the disparities in government-sponsored scholarships, where a significant portion of funding is allocated to students studying abroad.
While acknowledging the benefits of international exposure, he argued that investing in local institutions would yield long-term advantages, including infrastructure development, improved faculty training, and the overall enhancement of higher education standards in Ghana.
Prof. Dartey-Baah urged policymakers to develop a strategic framework that ensures scholarships are awarded based on national development priorities.
He proposed a model where funding is directed toward fields critical to Ghana’s economic growth, such as technology, engineering, and medicine, while still allowing for select international scholarships in specialized areas not widely available in local institutions.
