Government Urged to Reintroduce Tax Amnesty to Boost Revenue Mobilization

Kofi Frempong-Kore, a partner at tax consultancy firm KPMG, has called on the government to consider reintroducing a tax amnesty program as part of efforts to expand the tax base and enhance domestic revenue generation.

Speaking in response to the 2025 budget, Frempong-Kore emphasized that a well-structured tax amnesty could encourage non-compliant individuals and businesses to voluntarily declare and pay their taxes without fear of penalties. This, he argued, would help the government widen the tax net and improve revenue inflows to support national development.

“A tax amnesty program, if well implemented, has the potential to bring more taxpayers into the system. Many businesses and individuals may be willing to comply if given the opportunity to regularize their tax status without facing severe penalties. This will ultimately enhance domestic revenue mobilization,” he stated.

He further noted that similar initiatives in the past had yielded positive results and urged policymakers to design a framework that ensures transparency and accountability while encouraging long-term tax compliance.
