The National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has officially announced a lineup of activities to mark Ghana’s 68th Independence anniversary, which will begin with the commemoration of the historic 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident on Friday, February 28, 2025.
A statement released by the committee detailed a series of events designed to engage the public, especially the youth, and emphasize the importance of this significant milestone. The celebrations will include a variety of educational, cultural, and ceremonial programs aimed at deepening national pride and reflecting on Ghana’s journey since independence.
Key Highlights of the Program
28th February Crossroad Commemoration
The celebrations will commence with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Nationalism Park in Accra at 8:00 a.m. on February 28. The event will honor the memory of Ghana’s independence heroes and will be broadcast live on multiple platforms.
Nationwide School Quiz and Debate Competitions
On Sunday, March 2, 2025, students from across the country will compete in the grand finale of a nationwide school quiz focused on Ghana’s history, culture, and civic knowledge. This will be followed by a debate competition on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, providing a platform for young minds to express their perspectives on national development.
School Children Awards Programme
President John Mahama will host the prestigious annual School Children Awards Programme on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The event will celebrate academic excellence and innovation among Ghana’s youth, underscoring the government’s commitment to education and youth development.
Grand Independence Parade
The celebrations will culminate in a grand ceremonial parade at the forecourt of the presidency on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The parade will feature performances by security services, cultural groups, and schoolchildren, showcasing the rich diversity and unity of the Ghanaian people.
Public Engagement and Awareness
Ahead of the commemorative events, the Communications Subcommittee of the NCPC will launch a series of historical and educational initiatives to enhance public awareness. These include documentaries, social media campaigns, and special features on Ghana’s journey to independence.
An online discussion themed “The Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present” will be hosted on the popular X platform. This conversation aims to foster dialogue on the evolution of civic activism and its impact on Ghana’s democracy.
The committee has also urged media houses, bloggers, and influencers to amplify discussions around the anniversary theme to ensure active public participation.
Call for Nationwide Support
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, signed the statement, emphasizing the need for collective effort in making the celebration a success.
“We call on all stakeholders—media, civil society, and the public—to support this anniversary by sharing information, participating in events, and spreading the message of national unity and progress,” the statement urged.
