Government to Repeal Controversial L.I. 2462 Allowing Mining in Forest Reserves – Communications Minister Announces

The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that the government will repeal Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, a regulation that permits mining in forest reserves.

The decision follows significant public outcry and opposition from environmental groups including A Rocha Ghana and the Media Coalition Against Galamsey.

The announcement was made during an event commemorating World Press Freedom Day, hosted by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that although the original intention behind laying L.I. 2462 before Parliament on March 20 was to amend it—particularly to remove the President’s power to grant mining licenses in forest reserves—the broader implications of the regulation had prompted a full repeal.

Reaffirming the government’s stance against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, the Minister emphasized that the fight against the environmental menace remains a national priority. He went as far as to compare the scale and urgency of the crisis to that of terrorism.
