Government to Launch E-Health Initiative

Government is set to launch E-Health, a new digital health initiative, on Wednesday the 16th of October 2024.

This innovative platform aims to transform the Ghanaian healthcare system by digitizing patient records and streamlining medical processes. It also integrates the Disease Surveillance Unit’s protocols into the digital platform.

The government has previously introduced projects like the drone medical delivery service, which provides medical supplies to remote areas, and E-Pharmacy, a platform for online medication purchases.

E-Health will change Ghana’s healthcare system by moving patient record management from paper to electronic format. Implemented by Lightwave e-Health Solutions with the Ministry of Health, it’s the first of its kind in Africa.

Patient records from teaching, regional, and district hospitals have been digitized and networked. This allows access to patient records across the country. Patients transferred between hospitals won’t need to carry their medical files.

E-Health also adds changes in Ghana’s healthcare system over the past seven years. These include ambulances for all constituencies, the drone medical delivery service supplying drugs to over 2,000 hospitals, E-Pharmacy and more public hospitals.

This Health Information Management System is a new development in Ghana’s healthcare. The government and developers say it will give healthcare professionals real-time access to patient records, improving decision-making and patient safety.

The Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, is positive about the launch and its expected impact on healthcare.

“Medical records and patient histories will be in a single database, accessible by any networked hospital during a patient visit. This has increased efficiency in service delivery at our health facilities. Ghana will be the first country in Africa to implement this, and globally, only three countries have done it,” Dr. Bawumia said earlier at a health program in Tamale.
