The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed the government’s commitment to abolishing the Double-Track system in Senior High Schools by 2027, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the quality of education in Ghana.
Addressing the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in Sunyani, Bono Region, the Minister outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at phasing out the system. This plan includes significant curriculum reforms, restructuring of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), and improved infrastructure development across the country’s schools.
Curriculum Overhaul and Governance Reforms
The Minister emphasized the need for a curriculum overhaul to align with the demands of modern education. “We are working to revise the curriculum to meet the evolving needs of our education system,” Iddrisu stated. To ensure effective implementation, a new GETFund board will be constituted by Monday to oversee the approval and management of all expenditures related to these reforms.
GETFund’s Role in Transforming School Infrastructure
Haruna Iddrisu highlighted the critical role of GETFund in supporting the transformation agenda. The fund will prioritize the construction of additional classrooms and facilities to eliminate the overcrowding that necessitated the Double-Track system. These improvements are expected to create a conducive learning environment for students while addressing the current challenges in school infrastructure.
Government’s Investment in Education
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to investing in education as a cornerstone of national development. “We are determined to end the Double-Track system and ensure every student has access to quality education in a single-track framework,” he said.
A Vision for the Future
Haruna Iddrisu expressed confidence that, by 2027, the Double-Track system will be a thing of the past. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate effectively to achieve this ambitious goal, noting that the reforms would pave the way for a more robust and equitable education system.
This announcement is a beacon of hope for students, parents, and educators, signalling a transformative era for Ghana’s secondary education system.
