Government to Announce Strict Regulations on Opioid Use and Importation

The government is set to unveil a comprehensive plan to regulate the use and importation of opioids in Ghana, in response to growing concerns over the widespread abuse of these drugs, particularly among the youth.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh described the increasing misuse of opioids as a serious public health crisis.

He emphasized that the government is committed to tackling the issue through stricter policies, enforcement measures, and public education campaigns.

According to the minister, the new regulations will include tighter controls on the importation, distribution, and prescription of opioids to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

Healthcare providers will also be given clear guidelines on the responsible prescription of painkillers to reduce the risk of dependency and abuse. Additionally, law enforcement agencies will be empowered to crack down on illegal trafficking and sales of these substances.

Akandoh further stressed the importance of public awareness, urging parents, educators, and community leaders to play a role in educating young people about the dangers of opioid abuse.

He assured that the government will collaborate with stakeholders in the health sector, law enforcement, and international agencies to ensure the successful implementation of these measures.

With opioid addiction becoming a growing concern worldwide, Ghana’s proactive approach aims to prevent a full-blown crisis and protect future generations from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
