The Government of Ghana has confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, who is currently being held in the Netherlands over alleged money laundering and romance scam-related offences involving an estimated US$32 million.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague is engaging the relevant Dutch authorities to ensure that the rights and welfare of the legislator are protected throughout the process. He added that a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague has also been secured to provide legal support for the MP.
The arrest of the lawmaker is reportedly linked to investigations involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with reports indicating that the case has been under investigation for more than a year.
According to reports, the MP travelled from Ghana on Saturday, May 9, 2026, aboard KLM Flight 590 from the Kotoka International Airport. The aircraft arrived at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, at about 4:36 a.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Reports indicate that shortly after landing, the pilot informed passengers to remain seated for a security check. Dutch security officials subsequently boarded the aircraft, moved to the business class section where the MP was seated, identified him, read him his rights and arrested him before escorting him from the plane into a waiting security vehicle.
Parliament has also acknowledged the detention of the legislator. The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, explained that the MP was intercepted based on a United States arrest warrant and noted that such warrants can be executed in other jurisdictions when they are circulated through international security channels such as Interpol.
Mr. Dafeamekpor said Parliament is following developments surrounding the matter, while Ghana’s diplomatic authorities continue engagements with their Dutch counterparts to ensure due process is followed.
Meanwhile, Kwame Ohene Frimpong has denied the allegations levelled against him. In a video shared on social media and through a statement from his legal team, the MP maintained that he has not committed the offences being alleged and expressed confidence in the legal process.
