Government Prioritises Prison Reforms to Strengthen Public Safety — Vice President Opoku-Agyemang.

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to strengthening the Ghana Prisons Service, describing a well-resourced correctional system as a critical pillar of national security and public safety.

Speaking at the graduation parade of Prison Cadet Course Intake 32 in Accra, the Vice President said government’s sustained investments are aimed at restoring dignity, efficiency, and humanity within Ghana’s correctional facilities. She noted that improved logistics, enhanced operational support, and the long-overdue increase of the daily feeding allowance for inmates from GHC 1.80 to GHC 5.00 demonstrate clear progress toward meaningful reform.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasised that every Ghanaian, regardless of circumstance deserves to be treated with dignity, care, and humanity.
She explained that the increase in feeding allowance would enable the over 14,000 inmates nationwide to receive more nutritious and decent meals, contributing to better welfare and rehabilitation outcomes.

The Vice President added that the government remains fully committed to deepening these reforms in the years ahead to ensure that Ghana’s correctional system continues to contribute positively to public safety, rehabilitation, and national development.
