Government Mourns Passing of Dagbon Overlord Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II

The Government of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing his death as a great loss to the nation.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, July 13, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, extended his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of mourning.

The statement paid glowing tribute to the late Yaa Naa, describing him as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign ushered in healing, reconciliation and lasting peace in Dagbon after years of conflict.

According to the Presidency, the late monarch’s unwavering commitment to unity, stability and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between traditional authorities and the Government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana.

The Government further honoured Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II for his invaluable service to the nation, noting that his wisdom, exemplary leadership and dedication to peace would continue to inspire future generations.

The statement concluded with prayers for the repose of the late King’s soul, saying, “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
