ACCRA, Ghana, 28th September: The Government of Ghana has announced the implementation of a contra flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors leading into the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra.
The initiative, being implemented through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), will take effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The contra flow system will operate during peak hours, 6am to 9am in the morning and 4pm to 8pm in the evening.
The corridors identified for the initial implementation are:
- Amasaman–Accra Corridor
- Adenta–Accra Corridor
- Kasoa–Accra Corridor
According to the Ministry, the corridors have been selected because of the significant volumes of commuters travelling to and from the Central Business District during peak periods.
Under the arrangement, selected sections of the corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.
The designated contra flow lanes will be strictly reserved for Ayalolo BRT operations.
Government says the intervention is intended to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services, reduce journey times for commuters and ease congestion on major approaches to the Central Business District.
It is also expected to encourage greater use of mass public transportation, reduce pressure created by large volumes of private vehicles and improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
The Ministry said the arrangement would be implemented on designated sections of the corridors, subject to approved traffic management and road safety requirements.
