GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS ALLOWING RESIDENTS TO FIX ROADS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES – AYARIGA

The government is considering a new plan that will allow residents to contribute towards fixing roads and improving infrastructure in their communities.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says the government is developing a partnership model with homeowners to improve roads, drainage systems and other facilities in deprived urban communities.

The proposed initiative, known as the Inner-City Big Push Initiative, will initially target Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi and Sekondi-Takoradi before being extended to other parts of the country.

Mr Ayariga said under the plan, communities would be divided into sections of about 200 homes, with experts assessing the infrastructure needs and estimating the cost of development.

The government and homeowners are expected to share the cost, while government incentives would help reduce the financial burden on residents.

He said the initiative would focus on improving neighbourhood roads, drainage systems, walkways, street lighting and green spaces.

Mr Ayariga added that the government had begun consultations with relevant institutions and would present the proposed plan to President John Dramani Mahama for further consideration.

The initiative is expected to complement the government’s broader Big Push infrastructure programme.
