ACCRA, Ghana, 15th September: President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, stressing that the state cannot and should not undertake every investment required for Ghana’s national development alone.
He said private-sector investments such as the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City Project are critical to complementing government’s own infrastructure and economic development efforts.
President Mahama made the call during the ceremonial revealing of the Sentuo Airport Garden City Project in Accra.
“This is the kind of partnership Ghana needs. Government cannot and should not undertake every investment required for national development alone,” he said.
According to him, government’s responsibility is to create a stable and enabling environment in which businesses can invest, expand and succeed.
He said government would continue working to strengthen the business environment while ensuring that the opportunities created by investments reach the Ghanaian people.
The President said the Sentuo development is an important private-sector addition to the transformation taking place in the airport enclave.
He cited government’s own investments in the area, including a seven-storey development at the Accra International Airport for which he broke ground on August 27, 2026.
The airport project comprises 2,030 parking bays, two hotels and commercial facilities, with aviation institutions financing the development.
President Mahama said the combination of public and private investment would help transform the airport enclave and improve Accra’s image as an international destination.
He said the airport area is particularly important because it often provides visitors with their first impression of Ghana.
Roads, buildings, streets, services and the general environment, he explained, all contribute to how visitors perceive the country.
President Mahama therefore urged government institutions and regulatory authorities to work closely with the developers to remove legitimate bottlenecks while ensuring that the public interest remains protected.
He also called on investors to comply fully with Ghana’s laws, uphold high standards and create genuine opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and workers.
The President said the ultimate success of the Sentuo project would not be determined simply by the number of buildings constructed but by its contribution to the economy, the quality of the urban environment and the opportunities created for Ghanaians.
He said he looked forward to returning to the site after completion to see the hotel welcoming guests, the conference centre hosting major events, and the residential, healthcare, retail and leisure facilities fully operational.
More importantly, he said, he expected to see Ghanaian businesses that had grown because of the investment, young people who had acquired new skills and workers whose livelihoods had improved.
President Mahama subsequently performed the ceremonial sod-cutting to officially commence the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City Project.
