The government has announced plans to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s cultural and creative arts infrastructure.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie made the announcement during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026. She explained that the proposed facility would complement the existing National Theatre in Accra and provide more opportunities for performers, creatives and cultural practitioners in the Ashanti Region.
However, the Minister clarified that the immediate priority is not to begin construction of an entirely new theatre. Instead, government intends to complete an already-started theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the Ashanti Region.
According to Gomashie, after touring cultural facilities in the region, she proposed to Cabinet that government focus on completing unfinished infrastructure before committing resources to a new project. Cabinet has approved the proposal.
The Minister also disclosed plans to rehabilitate and modernise the existing National Theatre in Accra.
The proposed Kumasi National Theatre is expected to strengthen the creative arts sector by providing a major platform for theatre, music, dance, film, cultural exhibitions and other artistic productions.
It could also help decentralise access to major cultural infrastructure beyond Accra and give creatives in the Ashanti Region a bigger space to showcase their talents.
For Ghana’s creative industry, the announcement has renewed conversations about the need for modern and accessible infrastructure to support the country’s growing entertainment and cultural sectors.
While the timeline for construction of a completely new National Theatre in Kumasi has not been announced, the government’s immediate focus remains on completing the existing project in the Ashanti Region.
