There is an urgent need for the government and city planners to re-evaluate the structures and systems of human activities obstructing waterways and drainage systems leading to the sea.
Human activities have been increasingly threatening water sources in the southern part of Accra, where mountain ranges surround major tributaries. These areas, which are meant to facilitate natural drainage, have been filled with stones and sand, blocking the flow of surface water and contributing to frequent flooding in the city.
Local governance expert Issaka Amon Kotei raised these concerns during his appearance on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.
Kotei emphasized the need for city managers, planners, and coordinators to actively work towards obtaining permits from district planning authorities to regulate development. He called on municipal chief executives to be more proactive, collaborating with experts to implement policies and decisions aimed at managing the country’s flood challenges.
In a related development, President John Dramani Mahama delivered a stern message at the National Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in Accra on Monday, condemning the illegal construction of buildings in waterways. He attributed such practices as a significant cause of devastating floods in several communities.
The President criticized the “reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety,” which has led to the encroachment on vital water retention areas and designated Ramseyer sites.
“This must stop!” President Mahama declared. “We will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others.”
The President made it clear that such actions would no longer be tolerated, announcing the imminent demolition of all illegal structures obstructing waterways. He emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding the interests of the broader community.
“Those structures will be pulled down,” he said firmly. “The law will be enforced, and those who flout it will face the consequences.”
