Spotify recently announced Sumisola Agbebi as the EQUAL Africa Artist for February 2025, recognizing her exceptional talent and influence in the gospel music scene. She joins Qing Madi in the 2025 EQUAL Africa program, which highlights remarkable female artists across the continent.
A passionate music lover from a young age, Sumisola began singing at just four years old, and her dedication has been evident ever since. Her participation in various gospel competitions has earned her numerous accolades, establishing her as a leading figure in the genre.
Sumisola made her debut with the release of the single “Amazing” in November 2020, a song that has since become a key milestone in her career. Her latest release, “Holy Spirit,” reflects her deep reverence and dependence on God’s Spirit, resonating with fans through her powerful spiritual messages. She is also gearing up for the release of her upcoming album, Glory, on February 21, 2025.
In a recent interview with EQUAL, the talented singer revealed her unexpected skill of playing the drums. “I think the most surprising thing about me is that I play the drums. Many people wouldn’t expect it, but it’s something I genuinely enjoy,” she shared.
Reflecting on her musical journey, Sumisola expressed that her love for music started early, with a clear purpose: “I realised at a very young age that I loved music and knew I was going to use it to glorify God. My reason for pursuing this craft is simply to give God glory.”
Growing up, Sumisola drew inspiration from gospel greats like Cece Winans, Mama Bola Are, Shola Allyson, and Kim Burrell, shaping the foundation of her sound, which she describes as “one that heralds the king (JESUS) with an Afro-Western feel.”
As one of Nigeria’s top female gospel artists, Sumisola is well aware of the challenges faced by women in the industry. This has driven her to use her platform to support and empower other female worship leaders. “I have been intentional about holding the door open for other female worship leaders to grow and be of value to the world with the message of Jesus. I plan to do this through mentoring sessions, collaborations, and community building,” she explained.
Despite the challenges of navigating the music industry as a female artist, Sumisola encourages up-and-coming gospel singers to keep Christ at the center of their journey.
