TEMA, Ghana, 28 March: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has commended President John Dramani Mahama following the adoption of a landmark slavery resolution by the United Nations General Assembly, led by Ghana.
According to Mr. Koomson, President Mahama demonstrated bold and courageous leadership by championing an issue many global leaders have long been reluctant to confront.
He stressed that such a move deserves divine blessings, noting that history will remember the President for standing up for justice and truth.
He further offered prayers for President Mahama, asking for divine protection against any negative consequences that may arise from his stance.
Mr. Koomson expressed hope that any evil plans directed at the President would backfire, while God continues to guide and safeguard him.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, March 28, Mr. Koomson described the development as a distinguished diplomatic achievement that has elevated Ghana’s voice in the global conversation on slavery and its lasting impact.
The resolution, presented on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, calls for renewed international commitment to reparative justice for African nations and descendants of enslaved people.
It urges member states to engage in structured dialogue and take concrete actions to address the enduring social, economic, and cultural consequences of slavery.
Following extensive deliberations, the motion was adopted with 123 votes in favour.
However, the United States, Argentina, and Israel voted against it, while 52 countries abstained.
The United States described the resolution as “highly problematic,” acknowledging the historical injustice of slavery but raising concerns over the scope and intended beneficiaries of reparations.
