Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Presidential Staffer, Nana Yaa Akyenpim Jantuah, has sharply criticized the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, for describing the Tamale High Court’s ruling on the 2024 Parliamentary elections in the Kpandai Constituency which ordered a rerun as a “kangaroo ruling.”
According to Nana Yaa, Afenyo-Markin’s conduct is becoming increasingly troubling and, if not checked, could pose serious problems. She emphasized that as a lawyer, he ought to know that court rulings are based strictly on evidence, echoing former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s reminder that “the law is the law.” She questioned why, if the court followed legal procedures and arrived at a judgment based on presented evidence, the Minority Leader would resort to such a dismissive description.
Nana Yaa further argued that even the unilateral change of the constituency’s collation centre, without notifying or consulting both parties, was itself a major red flag before even considering the broader inconsistencies recorded in the area.
She also questioned Afenyo-Markin’s public outbursts, referencing his comment about being ready to go to Nsawam Prison. Nana Yaa remarked sarcastically that if he truly wishes to go, he should try it, “perhaps because he has never been there before.” She added that once locked up, he would understand what imprisonment truly means stressing that if Nsawam Prison were such a pleasant place, then Ken Ofori-Atta would still be in Ghana by now.
