The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned traders against cooking and keeping liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in market spaces, cautioning that such practices could expose entire trading centres to devastating fire outbreaks.
Assistant Divisional Officer One (ADO I), Joshua Kugblenu, expressed concern about traders who cook in their shops using gas cylinders fitted with burners, describing the practice as a potential fire hazard that could endanger lives and destroy property.
Speaking in an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s morning show, Adekyee Mu Nsem, hosted by Nana Dogbe, Mr. Kugblenu stressed that markets are meant for trading and not cooking, urging traders, particularly market women, to avoid activities that could trigger fire outbreaks.
He explained that the presence of cooking equipment and combustible materials in crowded market spaces could increase the danger of fire incidents, making it important for traders to observe basic fire safety precautions.
Mr. Kugblenu also cautioned traders who deal in cosmetics and other highly flammable products to ensure proper storage, labelling and arrangement of their goods to minimise fire risks.
He further urged shop owners to engage certified electricians for electrical installations and avoid relying on unqualified technicians, stressing that faulty electrical connections could create dangerous conditions in commercial spaces.
The GNFS officer encouraged traders to acquire suitable fire extinguishers after consulting fire officers for professional assessment of their shops and the specific fire risks associated with their businesses.
He stressed that traders must prioritise preventive measures and comply with fire safety requirements rather than wait for an emergency before taking action.
