The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has publicly apologized to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, following controversial remarks made by its Public Relations Officer, ADOI Alex King Nartey, regarding the recent devastating fire outbreak in Adum, Kumasi.
The tragic incident, which began in the early hours of Friday, destroyed over 5,000 shops, leaving countless traders in despair and causing extensive property damage. Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the inferno, finally extinguishing it by Sunday morning.
Amid the chaos, Dr. Amoakohene expressed frustration over what he perceived as a delayed response from the GNFS. In response, Alex Nartey reportedly said, “Shouting doesn’t quench fire,” a comment that was deemed disrespectful and provoked public outrage. The Minister subsequently demanded a formal apology from the GNFS.
In a letter dated March 24, 2025, Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella M. Ntow Sapong described Nartey’s comments as “uncomplimentary and unfortunate,” extending the Service’s unreserved apologies to the Regional Minister and the affected communities.
“The Ghana National Fire Service deeply regrets the remarks made by our PRO during this difficult time and assures the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence,” the letter stated.
The Chief Fire Officer reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to enhancing fire response and management in the region. She emphasized the GNFS’s ongoing collaboration with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and other stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.
This apology comes as traders and residents of Adum grapple with the aftermath of the fire, calling for improved safety measures and quicker interventions in future emergencies. The GNFS has pledged to review its operations and invest in training to ensure a more efficient response to such incidents.
The Adum fire serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust disaster management systems, and the GNFS has vowed to uphold its duty to protect lives and property.
