GNAT Urges Government to Review Single Spine Pay Policy by Year-End

Rev. Isaac Owusu, President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has urged the government to review the Single Spine Pay Policy before the end of the year. He argued that a prompt review would boost workers’ salaries and improve their overall conditions of service.

Rev. Owusu made these remarks at GNAT’s 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference in Accra on January 5.

President John Dramani Mahama responded positively, assuring teachers and workers that his administration was prepared to act swiftly. “Everybody was happy [with Tier 2 and Tier 3 pensions initially], but the time has come to review it again,” he said. He noted that the Trades Union Congress (TUC) had raised the issue, adding, “I told Comrade Joshua and his team that we’re prepared to put together a working team to examine the whole pension reform, come up with suggestions, and improve it so everyone feels secure in retirement. A safe and secure working environment is a must.”

The president also pledged a thorough review of pension policies to ensure workers enjoy secure and dignified retirements.
