GNAT Issues One-Month Ultimatum to Education Ministry, GES Over Conditions of Service

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES), demanding the immediate implementation of the revised conditions of service by the end of April. Failure to comply, the association warns, will trigger significant industrial action.

The delay in enforcing the new conditions has fueled mounting frustration and unrest among over 300,000 teachers nationwide. GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah,  expressed deep concern over the growing discontent within the teaching fraternity.

“We have officially notified the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations that they have until the end of April to resolve all outstanding issues. If they fail to act, the month of May will be turbulent,” he cautioned on April 2.

Mr. Musah, who recently toured all regions of the country, revealed that teachers are deeply dissatisfied with the stagnation of their conditions of service. Upon returning from his engagements, he promptly addressed the matter in writing to the Minister of Education, urging swift action from Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.

“I have been across the country, and the frustration among teachers is palpable. This is why I wrote to the Minister of Education, emphasizing the urgency of addressing all unresolved concerns. We expect nothing less than concrete action,” he stated.

He also called on the National Labour Commission (NLC) to proactively intervene before tensions escalate into industrial disruptions.

“The National Labour Commission must not wait until we reach the breaking point before stepping in. Too often, we see last-minute court interventions when the situation is already out of hand. The time to act is now,” Mr. Musah stressed.

With the clock ticking toward the deadline, all eyes are on the Education Ministry and GES to avert a looming crisis on the labour front.
