GJA President Calls on Police to Act Swiftly in Media General–NPP Standoff, Demands Apology from NPP Official

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, is calling on the Ghana Police Service to take immediate and decisive action in resolving the ongoing impasse between Media General and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following what the GJA describes as a clear threat to media freedom and the safety of journalists.

The call comes after comments made by the NPP’s Third National Chairman Alhaji Masawudu, which the GJA has condemned as intimidating and dangerous to the work of journalists. Mr. Dwumfour warned that such statements, left unaddressed, could set a troubling precedent for press freedom in Ghana.

Speaking at a press engagement in Accra, the GJA President emphasized that “the safety and independence of the media are non-negotiable in any democratic society.”

He added, “It is deeply concerning when political figures make remarks that can incite hostility or violence against journalists. We will not sit back while the media is bullied or threatened.”
Mr. Dwumfour further stated that the GJA is demanding a public apology from the NPP’s Third National Chairman for his actions, which have sparked outrage within the media fraternity.
