GJA Demands Probe and Prosecution After Soldiers Brutally Assault Media General Journalist

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the brutal assault of Media General’s North East Regional Correspondent, Solomon Kwame Kanalume, allegedly by military personnel.

The Association expressed deep concern over what it described as a disturbing rise in attacks against journalists by security agencies. It has demanded that all military officers involved in the incident be identified, interdicted, and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.

Addressing a press briefing after the attack, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwomfour stated that Mr. Kanalume was lawfully carrying out his professional duties at the time of the incident. He condemned the actions of the military personnel, noting that the journalist was subjected to inhumane treatment and had his mobile phone seized.

According to Mr. Dwomfour, such conduct demonstrates a dangerous disregard for the rights of civilians and journalists, and ultimately undermines public confidence in the professionalism and discipline of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The GJA has urged the relevant authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves, ensure accountability, and provide adequate protection and support for the victim.
