2024 Girls Cup: Black Maidens Win First Edition On Penalties

Ghana’s U17 national female team defeated the Super Falmingos of Nigeria at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence on Sunday to clinch the inaugural edition of the championship via penalty shootouts.

Joe Adarkwa’s girls, en route to the finals had easily brushed off Benin in 4-1, 3-2 scorelines in a double-header and 5-0 demolition exercise against Cote D’Ivoire in the quarter and semifinals respectively.

The Flamingos has to fight back to neutralize two first half goals by the Maidens thanks to their determination and tactical approach in the second half.

Precious Chiemerie Oscar broke through Ghana’s defense to score to halve the deficit in the 33rd minute before Chidera Harmony Chidi equalized with a clinical finish in the 78th minute.

Kumasi Sports Academy’s Gertrude Amoafoa scored the opening goal, sending the home crowd into agog in the 13th minute.

Just five minutes later, Priscilla Mensah, a talented product of Sissamba Ladies, found the back of the net to double Ghana’s lead in what looked to be an opened floodgates.

The Maidens completed the assignment of host and win after that tight game traveled to the spot kicks where Ghana edged Nigeria on 5-4 penalties.

Shakirat Moshood, Peace Effiong, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Nkpa all scored their spotkicks for Nigeria except Taiwo Adegoke.

Latifa Abesik, Christiana Ashiaku, Zainatu Wahab, Rabiatu Maltiti and Victoria Banful all scored their kicks for the Ghana.

The Maidens remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and begins a rebuilding journey to becoming yet another strong side on the continent.
