Ghana’s HIV Crisis: The number is higher than reported – Linda Donkor believes

Ghana’s HIV crisis is worsening, with over 334,700 people living with the virus as of December 1, 2025, according to new national data released on World AIDS Day. Women and young people, particularly adolescent girls and young women, are disproportionately affected due to social and economic disparities.
Linda Ewenam Donkor, CEO of the Auntie Linda Foundation, believes the actual number of people living with HIV is higher than reported. Many HIV patients fear seeking medical help due to stigma, she said on Ahotor FM’s Midday News.
“People have confided in me through social media, sharing their status. I can say the number is more than documented,” Donkor said.
Donkor urged Ghanaians to tackle stigmatization to halt the spread of HIV. “Stigma is driving people away from seeking medication. We must support those living with HIV,” she said.
Ghana must strengthen prevention, treatment, and care efforts to meet global UNAIDS targets and reduce new infections, prevent AIDS-related deaths, and support those living with the virus.
