Ghana’s Black Maidens Beat Argentina 5-4 on Penalties to Reach FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Ghana’s Black Maidens advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup by defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in their Round of 16 match on 28 October 2026 in Morocco.

The match took place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. Ghana controlled much of the early play, took the lead, were reduced to 10 players late on, conceded a late equaliser, and then held their nerve from the spot. This marked Ghana’s return to the last eight for the first time since 2018, following previous quarter-final appearances in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. It was Argentina’s first participation in the tournament.

Ghana started brightly and opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Cynthia Obinsrewuo provided a well-timed square pass, and Jessica Appiah finished clinically to give the Black Maidens a 1-0 lead.

Argentina remained dangerous. Mercedes Diz went clean through and clipped the crossbar. Later, Obinsrewuo chased a long ball, lobbed Argentina goalkeeper Bianca Virga, and appeared to make it 2-0, but the assistant referee’s flag ruled it out for offside.

Ghana goalkeeper Belinda Marku Aklie produced several important saves to preserve the lead. Captain Seidatu Wahab was forced off through injury around the 72nd minute.

The turning point came in the 77th minute when left-back Hajara Adam received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Ghana with 10 players. Argentina pressed their numerical advantage. In the 86th minute, Mercedes Diz equalised with a terrific header from a looping free-kick that dropped over Aklie. The goal was Diz’s seventh of the tournament. Argentina continued to push for a winner, but Ghana’s defence held firm to force a penalty shootout.

Ghana converted all five of their penalties. The scorers were Saraphina Essenam, Christiana Ashiaku, Rafia Osman, Juliana Gyekyewaa and Jessica Appiah, who scored the decisive fifth kick. Argentina’s Oriana Gomez missed her attempt, which proved decisive.

Jessica Appiah was named Player of the Match for her goal, overall contribution while Ghana were under pressure, and the winning penalty.

Black Maidens head coach Joe Nana Adarkwah was emotional and proud after the game, noting he had lost his voice from celebrating. He said the team controlled the match until the red card, followed instructions tactically, and thanked God for the penalty win. Looking ahead, he stated that they were waiting for their next opponent and would deal with them, adding that they have to qualify for the semi-finals.

Ghana are making their seventh appearance at the tournament after an eight-year absence. The result sends them into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Japan–Kenya Round of 16 match. Argentina’s campaign ended in their debut edition.

The victory highlighted Ghana’s resilience under pressure, Appiah’s composure as the standout performer, and solid goalkeeping and defensive organisation in the closing stages despite being a player short. It continues the Black Maidens’ strong historical record at this level while eliminating the South American debutants in dramatic fashion.
