Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad must be submitted by June 1, says Henry Asante Twum

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed through its Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, that the final squad list for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup must be officially submitted to FIFA by June 1, 2026.

This follows the earlier deadline for provisional squads, which teams need to provide by May 11, 2026, giving coaches a structured timeframe to assess players based on recent form, injuries, and overall readiness.

The final roster will include up to 26 players, with at least three goalkeepers required, and once locked in by the June 1 cutoff, alterations are only permitted in rare cases such as severe injury under strict FIFA protocols.

These deadlines are integral to FIFA’s organization of the expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Ghana earned their spot by dominating CAF Group I in qualification, securing first place with eight wins, one draw, and just one loss across ten matches, highlighted by a decisive 1-0 victory over Comoros that sealed direct qualification.

Under head coach Otto Addo, the Black Stars will aim to surpass their best-ever World Cup finish—the quarterfinals in 2010—while drawing on a core of talented players like Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and emerging stars.

The group-stage opponents for Ghana were finalized in the official draw held on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Black Stars landed in Group L, facing a demanding lineup of England, Croatia, and Panama.

This combination pits Ghana against two European giants with strong tournament histories—England as perennial contenders featuring elite Premier League talent and recent deep runs, and Croatia known for tactical nous and consistency, including their 2018 final appearance—alongside a resilient Panama side from CONCACAF that brings physicality and counter-attacking danger.

FIFA has also released the confirmed match schedule for Group L involving Ghana. The Black Stars open their campaign on June 17, 2026, against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, with kickoff at 7:00pm ET, setting an early tone in a North American venue.

Their second fixture comes on June 23, 2026, when they take on England at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium area) in the Foxborough/Boston region, USA, starting at 4:00pm ET—a marquee encounter expected to draw massive global viewership given the historical prestige and star power involved.

The group concludes on June 27, 2026, with Croatia versus Ghana at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, USA, at 5:00pm ET, where results could determine advancement.

In the expanded format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups progress directly to the round of 32, while several third-placed sides may also qualify based on overall performance across the tournament.

This setup offers Ghana realistic pathways to the knockout stages if they can navigate the challenges posed by their opponents’ quality and experience.

As preparations intensify, the May provisional squad reveal will provide the initial glimpse into Otto Addo’s thinking, heightening anticipation among supporters ahead of the critical June 1 final submission deadline and the tournament’s kickoff in June.
