Ghanaian Referee Theophilus Akugre Selected for 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt

Ghana’s Theophilus Aberenga Akugre has been chosen among 56 top officials for a training program in Cairo, Egypt, ahead of the prestigious TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Akugre, a skilled assistant referee, will join 14 other elite assistant referees from across Africa to officiate during the biennial tournament, scheduled to take place from April 27 to May 19, 2025.

Theophilus Akugre has been on the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) radar following his successful participation in training programs last year.

In May 2024, Akugre traveled to Cairo alongside fellow Ghanaian referees Reginald Collins Amoah and Seth Abletor for the new CAF/FIFA Referee Course. This experience has undoubtedly contributed to his selection for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Akugre’s selection marks the second Ghanaian referee assigned to a major tournament this year.

Centre Referee Reginald Collins Amoah is currently in Morocco for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, where he recently officiated the match between Somalia and Tunisia on April 1, 2025.

This demonstrates the growing reputation and recognition of Ghanaian referees in the international football community.

The training program in Cairo will provide Akugre and the other selected officials with the opportunity to hone their skills, gain valuable experience, and prepare for the challenges of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

With the tournament featuring the best young talent from across Africa, the role of the referees will be crucial in ensuring fair play and exciting matches.
