Renowned Ghanaian entertainment critic, Enock Agyepong, has called out the Ghanaian media for not doing enough to support Rocky Dawuni in his bid to win a Grammy Award.
Speaking on Ahotor Mmre with Obaapa Janee, Mr Agyepong stressed that while many in the media celebrate Dawuni’s nominations, they fail to take the necessary actions that could actually help him secure a win.
According to him, Ghanaian media houses should go beyond simply reporting on Dawuni’s Grammy nominations and actively push his brand to a wider audience.
“The media plays a huge role in shaping narratives and creating momentum for an artist. We can’t just keep saying ‘Rocky should win’ without putting in the work to make it happen,” he argued.
The outspoken critic emphasized that global recognition does not happen by chance but through consistent and strategic promotion. He pointed out that Nigerian artists have benefited greatly from strong media backing, which has led to multiple Grammy wins for the likes of Burna Boy and Tems.
“The Nigerian media aggressively supports their artists. They flood the internet, TV, and radio with their music, ensuring the whole world takes notice. Why can’t we do the same for Rocky?” he questioned.
In a recent interview with Graphic Online after the nomination Rocky expressed unwavering confidence in his prospects for the upcoming 2025 ceremony, stating, “I’m 100 per cent sure I will win my first Grammy next year. Weighing my chances on a scale of 1-10, I believe it is 10. I’ve worked very hard over the years and my consistency will pay off. I’m extremely confident,” he said.
Rocky Dawuni, a renowned reggae musician, has earned his fourth Grammy nomination for his single “Rise” in the Best Global Music Performance category. Despite previous nominations in 2015, 2021, and 2023, Dawuni has yet to clinch the award
Despite being Ghana’s most successful Grammy contender, he has yet to win, something Agyepong believes can change if the media steps up its efforts.
“ Airplay matters, interviews matter. Streaming matters. If the media decides to prioritize Rocky’s music and brand just like we do with other artists, the world Will take Ghanaian music seriously,” he added.
Agyepong urged Ghanaian journalists, creatives and media platforms to rally behind Dawuni, not just in words but in action. He encouraged them to create more conversations around his work, feature him in international discussions, and amplify his music across all platforms.
Enock Agyepong’s call serves as a wake-up call for Ghana’s entertainment industry. If taken seriously, it could mark the beginning of a new era where Ghanaian artists don’t just get nominated but actually bring home the awards.
