Ghanaian Architect and Team Honoured in Milan for Osu Salem Restoration Design

Ghanaian architect David Kojo Derban, in collaboration with Maltese architectural restoration firm AP Valletta, has received international recognition for their proposed restoration of the historic Osu Salem Presbyterian Boys School in Accra.

Their project was awarded in the “Old and New” category of the prestigious Architectural Review (AR) awards, earning a spot among just two projects listed as “Highly Recommended.”

The award ceremony took place last week during Milan Design Week in Italy.

Originally built 170 years ago by Basel missionaries, the Osu Salem Presbyterian Boys School stands as a significant heritage site.

Beyond its striking architecture, it served as a moral and educational cornerstone for the Osu Presbyterian community and laid the foundation for Ghana’s modern education system.

David Kojo Derban, a member of the Ghana Institute of Architects and a strong advocate for heritage conservation, remarked that the award signals global recognition of Ghana’s architectural legacy.

He emphasized the potential for heritage preservation to contribute meaningfully to national development and promote economic growth through urban tourism.
