The Deputy General Secretary of the United Party (UP), Nana Yaw Sarpong, has asserted that Ghana would effectively become a one-party state without the presence and active role of the United Party.
According to him, the UP remains the most competent opposition force in the country, keeping the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government on its toes.
Mr. Sarpong emphasized that a responsible opposition does not merely criticize government policies but also provides credible alternatives, something he claims the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has failed to do.
> “A responsible opposition is not just about attacking government decisions. It is about offering practical solutions. Without the United Party, Ghana would have no real checks on power and could easily drift toward a one-party state,” he said.
Citing the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, Mr. Sarpong noted that the UP has not only criticized the government’s approach but also proposed alternative strategies aimed at achieving sustainable results.
> “We have challenged the government on its handling of galamsey, but we also presented alternative policies to tackle the issue more effectively,” he added.
Mr. Sarpong reaffirmed the United Party’s commitment to providing constructive opposition and contributing meaningfully to national development.
