Ghana Well Positioned to Manufacture Its Own Vaccines – Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the country is strategically positioned to manufacture its own vaccines, marking a significant step towards self-sufficiency in public health and pandemic preparedness.

Speaking during a press engagement in Accra, Hon. Akandoh emphasized that the government has laid the necessary groundwork, including infrastructure development, human resource training, and regulatory frameworks, to kickstart local vaccine production.
He noted that Ghana’s capacity to develop vaccines is no longer a distant dream, but a realistic goal backed by strong political will and international partnerships.

“We have made substantial investments in our pharmaceutical and research sectors, and today, Ghana is well positioned to manufacture its own vaccines,” Akandoh stated. “This is not only critical for our national health security but also positions Ghana as a hub for vaccine production in West Africa.”

The Health Minister cited the establishment of the National Vaccine Institute and collaborations with international organizations as key pillars in this vision.
He also highlighted progress in capacity building among local scientists and researchers, as well as strides in regulatory readiness through the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

This announcement comes in the wake of global supply chain challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed Africa’s heavy reliance on external sources for vaccines and other medical supplies.

Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh assured Ghanaians that vaccine production will prioritize high standards of safety and efficacy, and that the government is working closely with private sector stakeholders to ensure a sustainable rollout.

“Local vaccine production will not only protect our people from future outbreaks but will also create jobs, boost research, and strengthen our health systems,” he added.
