The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has attributed the persistent water distribution challenges in the Northern and Greater Accra Regions to human activities, including theft and destruction of pipelines by construction companies.
According to the company, these disruptions have significantly impacted the smooth supply of water to households and businesses.
Speaking to Ahotor News, the Head of Public Relations at GWCL, Stanley Martey, expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of illegal connections, vandalism, and the reckless destruction of water infrastructure during road and building construction projects.
He emphasized that these unlawful activities not only affect the company’s ability to provide a steady water supply but also lead to unnecessary financial burdens in repairing damaged pipelines.
Mr. Martey called for stronger enforcement of laws against such acts, urging local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and the public to work together in protecting water infrastructure.
He stressed that ensuring a consistent flow of water requires a collective effort, adding that individuals found guilty of tampering with water pipelines should face strict penalties to deter further violations.
With water demand rising across the country, the GWCL is appealing to Ghanaians to report illegal activities that threaten water distribution.
The company has assured residents in affected areas that measures are being put in place to restore and improve supply, but cooperation from all stakeholders is essential to achieving a long-term solution.
