The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has introduced a groundbreaking visa policy aimed at revolutionizing travel to Ghana. Under the new directive, all visa applications will be processed within just five working days, a significant reduction from the previous average of four to six weeks.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, via a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 21, 2025. The policy takes immediate effect and underscores the government’s commitment to improving efficiency in consular services.
“We have implemented robust measures across our diplomatic missions to drastically cut visa processing times from the troubling delays of weeks to our new five-day standard,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
No Automatic Approvals
While the five-day processing time ensures quicker decisions, the Minister clarified that it does not guarantee automatic approval. Applicants will receive either an approval or denial within the stipulated timeframe.
“A decision will be made within five working days to determine eligibility for a Ghanaian visa,” he emphasized.
Supporting Ghana’s Business and Tourism Agenda
The policy aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of positioning Ghana as a premier destination for business and tourism, as outlined during his January 2025 inaugural address. The President affirmed that “Ghana is open for business,” and this initiative gives practical meaning to that declaration.
“As Foreign Minister, I am committed to removing bureaucratic hurdles that have deterred potential investors and tourists. This is about making Ghana an easier, more attractive place to visit and invest in,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
Boosting International Engagement
The streamlined visa processing system is part of a broader strategy to enhance Ghana’s international profile. By reducing unnecessary delays, the government aims to attract more tourists, foster foreign investments, and strengthen global partnerships.
“This initiative is not just about faster visas; it’s about creating a welcoming environment for those who want to experience the vibrancy of our culture and explore business opportunities in Ghana. Come enjoy the Black Star experience,” Mr. Ablakwa urged.
The policy is expected to bolster tourism and business travel, driving economic growth and showcasing Ghana as a leader in efficient and traveler-friendly consular services.
