Ghana Triumphs at 15th African Armwrestling Championship

Host nation Ghana delivered a spectacular display of dominance by clinching the overall title at the 15th African Armwrestling Championship, held from April 29 to May 2, 2026, at the modern Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.

Competing proudly as the “Golden Arms,” the home team outclassed 21 other nations across the multi-day competition, finishing comfortably atop the medal table and reinforcing their status as Africa’s premier armwrestling powerhouse. Benin claimed second place, while South Africa rounded out the top three, with Nigeria and other nations delivering strong performances.

The hosts set a blistering pace right from the opening day, amassing an astonishing 95 medals on day one alone — 34 gold, 44 silver, and 17 bronze. They maintained their momentum through the final rounds, ultimately securing a commanding total haul that underscored their depth across senior, youth, and para categories.

Ghana walked away with a massive overall medal count, including dozens of gold medals and a points total that left no doubt about their superiority.
The Ghanaian squad shone as a dynamic blend of experienced veterans and exciting young talents.

Standout performers included Immigration officer Godwin (Immigration) Sackey — widely regarded as the poster boy of the event — the powerful Lankai sisters (including Raphael Lankai), Police Officer and World Champion Grace Mintah, team captain Edward Yamoah Asamoah, Abdul-Rasheed Tahiru, Florence Boakye Mensah, and many others.

These athletes not only dominated their respective categories but also displayed outstanding technique, power, and sportsmanship. Several pullers also earned qualification spots for the upcoming African Games in Egypt through their impressive showings.

The championship, themed “Pulling Africa Together,” brought together elite competitors from across the continent, including notable contingents from Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Mali, Togo, and more — a total of 22 participating nations.

The atmosphere at Borteyman was electric, enhanced by cultural performances, live music, and enthusiastic local support that turned the event into a true festival of African strength sports.

High-level leadership and excellent organization played a key role in the championship’s success. Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who even celebrated his birthday during the event, praised the discipline of the athletes and the unifying power of the sport.

African Armwrestling President Charles Osei Asibey, who was re-elected unopposed to lead the federation until 2030, lauded the high standard of competition and the seamless organization.

A grand reception hosted by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey further celebrated the athletes and all stakeholders.

Technical Director Hussein Akueteh Addy highlighted the nationwide recruitment drive and scientific preparation that underpinned Ghana’s triumph. Athletes like Godwin Sackey shared inspiring stories of how armwrestling has provided them with employment, international travel opportunities, and purpose, while urging Ghanaian youth to take up the accessible sport.

The event also featured important milestones, including regional elections and strengthened partnerships, such as with Next Level Energy Drink.

This resounding victory not only cements Ghana’s reputation as the undisputed continental leader in armwrestling but also signals the sport’s rapid growth and bright future across Africa.

With strong infrastructure, dedicated leadership, and a deep pool of talented athletes, the Golden Arms have set a new benchmark, leaving fans and participants eagerly anticipating future successes on the road to the next African Games and beyond.
