Ghana is set to begin issuing chip-embedded electronic passports (e-passports) from Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of a sweeping reform agenda aimed at modernizing the country’s passport system.
This announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23.
Originally unveiled on December 2, 2024, the upgraded e-passports come with advanced biometric features designed to enhance travel efficiency and significantly improve document security.
Each passport is embedded with a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and photographic data, alongside cutting-edge anti-fraud features including both visible and hidden security markers.
Replacing the current biometric passports, the chip-embedded version is a key part of the government’s broader digitalization and transparency agenda.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the initiative is aimed at eliminating the role of intermediaries in the passport application process, improving accessibility, and promoting a more citizen-focused service.
He also stated that the embedded E-passport will have international recognition.
