Ghana to Embark on Intensive Sanitation Drive Ahead of Christmas

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that a massive national clean-up exercise will take place in December this year.

According to the Minister, the government is finalizing the necessary logistics to support the initiative. He explained that once the logistics are launched, the exercise will begin immediately ahead of the usual National Sanitation Day, which falls on the first Saturday of December.

Hon. Ibrahim emphasized that this year’s sanitation drive will not be a one-day event but a comprehensive nationwide clean-up campaign lasting one to two weeks. The aim, he said, is to ensure a cleaner environment across the country, particularly in Accra, as the nation prepares for the festive season.

> “This year, the December National Sanitation Day will go beyond a single Saturday. We are planning an intensive one- to two-week campaign to clean up the country, especially Accra, as we approach Christmas,” he stated.

The Minister further disclosed that he is in talks with the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Abla Gifa Gormeshi, to spearhead the initiative. He explained that the collaboration is vital because tourism and cleanliness go hand in hand especially as Ghana gears up for the popular ‘Dirty December’ festive celebrations that attract visitors from around the world.

> “The Minister for Tourism has several festivals lined up for December, and since tourism thrives in a clean environment, we are partnering with her ministry to make this campaign a success,” he noted.

Hon. Ibrahim also challenged all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as the Ministries of Works and Housing and Roads and Highways, to actively participate in the upcoming clean-up exercise to ensure its success.
