The Ministry of Sports and Recreation in Ghana has taken a major step forward in transforming the country’s sports financing landscape by formally establishing and inaugurating the Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund.
This development occurred recently, with Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams leading the inauguration ceremony for an 11-member board at the ministry’s premises.
The Ghana Sports Fund, legally established under Act 1159 after receiving Cabinet approval, parliamentary passage, and presidential assent, aims to create a more structured, transparent, and sustainable mechanism for funding sports development across the nation.
It represents a shift away from inconsistent or ad-hoc funding models toward a dedicated resource pool that can support athlete development, grassroots initiatives, infrastructure improvements, capacity building, and opportunities in both mainstream and lesser-known sports.
During the inauguration, Minister Kofi Adams emphasized the board’s critical responsibility to manage and administer the fund in a way that ensures equity, predictability, accountability, and broad-based impact. He described the move as a defining moment that would help distribute opportunities more fairly, nurture talent at every level, and foster long-term planning in Ghanaian sports.
The minister tasked the members with delivering results that would mark a new era of responsible and inclusive sports financing. The board is chaired by Professor Koryoe Anim-Wright, with other key figures including Dr. David Kofi Wuaku serving as Administrator, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah (Chief Director of the ministry), Mr. Duah Alhassan Oteng (Technical Advisor), and additional members representing various stakeholders such as retired athletes (notably including legendary boxer Azumah Nelson.
The composition reflects a blend of expertise from administration, technical advisory roles, and sports community voices to guide the fund’s operations effectively. This inauguration paves the way for the Ghana Sports Fund to become fully operational, enabling the mobilization of resources from diverse sources while promoting good governance and measurable progress in national sports development.
It underscores the current administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports as a tool for youth empowerment, national pride, and socio-economic growth in Ghana.
