The United States has officially removed its 15% tariff on Ghana’s cocoa and a broad range of agricultural products, effective November 13, 2025. This move offers significant economic relief to Ghana, one of West Africa’s key export economies.
The rollback followed an Executive Order by President Trump, which rescinded the previous tariff imposed on Ghanaian cocoa and other goods such as cashew nuts, avocado, bananas, mangoes, oranges, limes, plantains, pineapples, guava, coconut, ginger, and assorted peppers. This decision is expected to boost Ghana’s export earnings by around $60 million annually.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the tariff reversal on his social media, noting its importance given that the U.S. is the world’s largest importer of chocolate and cocoa products. With Ghana exporting approximately 78,000 metric tons of cocoa beans yearly to the U.S. at a global market price of about $5,300 per ton, the economic benefits are substantial.
Beyond the financial uplift, the tariff removal signals a strengthening of diplomatic relations between the two nations. It follows months of evolving cooperation, especially concerning migration policies. Ghana aligned itself with the Trump administration’s immigration and deportation practices, leading to the U.S. lifting visa restrictions on Ghanaian nationals in September 2025, now allowing eligibility for five-year multiple entry visas.
This diplomatic progress places Ghana among a select group of African countries supporting the U.S. migration enforcement, contrasting with nations like Nigeria, which rejected such agreements. Observers interpret the tariff removal as part of this broader diplomatic recalibration, rewarding Ghana’s cooperation.
For Ghana, this tariff reversal comes at a crucial time as the government seeks fresh revenue amid global financial pressures. For the U.S., it reflects a strategic move to deepen ties with a stable West African partner amid intensifying global competition on the continent.
