Ghana Railway Workers Unpaid for Six Months as Sector Faces Uncertain Future – MD, Dr. Ing. Anyetei Reveals

The Managing Director of Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), Ing. Dr. Michael Adjei Anyetei, has raised alarm over the dire state of the country’s railway sector, warning that the company is on the verge of collapse.

In a briefing to the Minister of Railways, he painted a bleak picture of the financial and operational challenges facing the company, calling for swift government intervention to prevent total breakdown.

“You will bear with me that the rail sector, anything you do there is capital intensive. We don’t have the infrastructure to generate enough revenue to pay ourselves, let alone carry out maintenance works,” Dr. Anyetei stated.

One of the most pressing issues highlighted was the inability of the company to pay workers for the past six months.
“As I speak with you, Honorable, I know you may have heard. For some time now—exactly six months—the railway workers have not received their salaries,” he revealed.

Despite the current crisis, Dr. Anyetei clarified that he does not place the blame solely on the current administration, emphasizing that the railway sector’s woes are the result of years of neglect.

“Honorable Minister, I am not going to blame this government. What we are seeing now is a cumulative effect. When I say cumulative effect, I mean it did not start from this government,” he explained.

However, amid the gloom, the MD expressed optimism, pointing to a potential solution that could salvage the sector—the proposed deal with Ghana Manganese Company.
He urged the government to approve the deal without delay, stressing its critical role in reviving the railway company.

The Managing Director of Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), Ing. Dr. Michael Adjei Anyetei, has reinforced the importance of urgent action to prevent further deterioration of the railway system, which plays a crucial role in the country’s economic and transportation infrastructure. “the good news is that there is hope,” he assured.
