Ghana Premier League: Chelsea Hold Asante Kotoko in Kumasi

Asante Kotoko endured another frustrating afternoon on the pitch, as they were held to a goalless draw by a resolute Berekum Chelsea side at the iconic Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors controlled large portions of the match and enjoyed the majority of possession, yet they repeatedly came up against a stubborn and well-drilled defensive wall from the visitors.

Despite generating several promising moments and applying consistent pressure, Kotoko’s attackers could not find the crucial breakthrough needed to turn dominance into goals, leaving the home faithful disappointed once again.

Berekum Chelsea, on the other hand, executed their game plan to near perfection. They remained compact, disciplined, and focused throughout the ninety minutes, frustrating their more illustrious opponents with disciplined defending and timely blocks.

The visitors barely offered much going forward but succeeded in earning a hard-fought and valuable away point, which will provide a significant boost to their survival hopes in what has been a challenging campaign.

The result means Zito’s men, under coach Karim Zito, stay in 4th place in the Ghana Premier League standings with 31 points from their matches played so far. They now trail the league leaders by six points, a gap that continues to make the title race feel increasingly out of reach unless they can quickly rediscover their cutting edge in front of goal.

The tension on the touchline boiled over in the second half when Berekum Chelsea head coach Samuel Boadu was shown a red card by referee George Mawuli Vormawor. The incident unfolded around the 70th minute, as Boadu vehemently protested a contentious decision, voicing his strong dissatisfaction with the officiating.

Initially issued a yellow card for his animated complaints, the coach continued to remonstrate passionately, leading the referee to upgrade the caution to a straight red. Boadu was subsequently ordered off the field and forced to spend the remaining minutes of the match watching from the dressing room.

Despite losing their head coach, Berekum Chelsea displayed remarkable resilience and composure. The players stayed true to their defensive blueprint, maintaining a compact shape and disciplined structure that had already proven so effective in frustrating Asante Kotoko’s attacks.

Their organisation did not waver in the absence of Boadu on the sidelines, allowing them to see out the contest without conceding and claim a hard-earned clean sheet and valuable away point.

This stalemate adds to a pattern of dropped points at home, highlighting the need for greater clinical finishing as the Porcupine Warriors look to mount a stronger challenge in the second round of the season. For Berekum Chelsea, the draw represents encouragement and a step toward climbing away from the danger zone.
