Tema, Ghana – The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called for urgent measures to strengthen the Ghanaian Cedi, emphasizing that a strong currency is the backbone of a stable economy.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show with host Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson criticized Ghana’s heavy reliance on food imports despite having vast arable land capable of sustaining local production.
“A country like Ghana, with so much fertile land, should not be importing essential food items like tomatoes, pepper, and wheat. This over-reliance on imports is a major factor contributing to the depreciation of our currency,” he stated.
He warned that without proper strategies to curb food importation, the economy could face severe challenges, including high inflation.
Mr. Koomson stressed that strengthening the Cedi should be a national priority, adding that Ghana’s economy can only thrive when it fully utilizes its natural resources.
He urged key government officials, including the Finance Minister, the Minister of Agriculture, and the Minister of Trade and Industry, to implement policies that promote large-scale local production and reduce the country’s dependence on food imports.
