Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association Distances Itself from COCOBOD Protests, Calls for Dialogue

The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA), which represents more than 800,000 cocoa farmers and is affiliated with the Ghana Federation of Labour, has distanced itself from the ongoing demonstrations at the headquarters of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

The Association has questioned whether the individuals participating in the protests are genuinely cocoa farmers, stating that it does not support the action in its current form.

The protests erupted at COCOBOD’s headquarters in Accra, where groups of farmers gathered to express frustration over falling producer prices and delays in payments, which they say are pushing cocoa-growing households into economic hardship.

The demonstration follows similar protests in cocoa-growing areas, particularly in the Western North Region, where farmers marched through major towns to register their displeasure over the reduced farmgate price of cocoa.

Although COCOBOD has announced that payments have been made to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) to facilitate disbursement to farmers, many producers claim the funds have yet to reach them at the farmgate level, deepening their frustration.

However, the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association maintains that it prefers engagement over confrontation. The group has formally requested a meeting with government representatives and key stakeholders to discuss the challenges confronting the cocoa sector, including pricing concerns and payment delays.

According to the Association, constructive dialogue remains the most effective path to addressing farmers’ grievances and ensuring sustainable solutions for Ghana’s cocoa industry.
